Newark City

The largest city of New Jersey is Newark. Its population stood to be 277,140 as per 2010 US census. The first metropolitan commercial airport-Newark Liberty international airport- is located here. Some of the famous corporations have their headquarters in Newark e.g. Rutgers University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of Medicine and Dentistry, Prudential Financial and PSEG etc. The city is distributed into  5 wards and has many neighborhood. On the west side of the city are the residential suburbs, while on east are Newark bay and Passaic River, south is the heavily populated urban areas and industrial and middles class settlements towards the north.

Of these five wards, North, Central and West wards are residential areas while East and South wards are mostly used by industrial, airport and seaport management.

  • The North Ward has a population of 200,000 residents. Neighboring this ward are Mount Pleasant, Broadway and a part of  wealthy Forest Hill. Originally most of the population of this area was Italian but in recent past Latinos have settled in numbers enough to make it Latino dominated are. African-Americans settlements can also be spotted in the area.
  • The Central Ward covers most of the historic part of the city. University Heights, Government center, The Coast/Lincoln Park, Military Park and Springfield Belmont all are located there. During 19th century most of the inhabitants were Germans, white Catholic and Christians. Later Jews outnumbered the Germans who were eventually outnumbered by the Blacks. One of the largest health sciences university –UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School is located in this ward. It has four fire houses, a branch library, two police zones and 26 public schools.
  • The South Ward contains the neighborhoods of South Broad Valley, Dayton, Clinton Hill and Weequahic. The residents of this neighborhood are mainly Dominicans, African-Americans and Puerto Ricans. Ras Baraka(the Council Member) represents this part of the Ward. It has three fire houses, three branch libraries, 17 public schools, five daycare centers, a police precinct and a mini precinct.
  • The West Ward has neighborhoods of Ivy Hill, West Side, Fairmount, vailsburg and the wealthy Roseville part. The main residents of Roseville section are Italian American and Latino. The neighborhood mostly comprises Caribbean Americans with Haitians, Jamaicans and Guyanese, African Americans and Africans.
  • Lastly, the East Ward is heavily populated by the Portuguese Ironbound neighborhood but Brazilians are catching up fast. It is also Newark’s central commercial district successful and flourishing..

Besides it has a number of admirable buildings such as Newark Museum, the Newark Public Library, Veteran’s Administration building, Cass Gilbert-designed Essex county courthouse, National Newark Building, Arts High School, Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and the Newark Penn Station. The two beautiful sculptures in the city are ‘Wars of America’ and ‘Seated Lincoln’.

Situated near Military Park, New Jersey Performing Arts Center is the most often visited places in the US. The Newark Museum has the best Tibetan collection in the world along with great American art collection. This huge museum also contains a planetarium, a gallery for children’s exhibition, science galleries, a fire museum, an 18th century schoolhouse and a sculpture garden. Also a number of art galleries are located around the city e.g. Gallery Aferro, City Without Walls, Ravens Contemporary, Paul Robeson Galleries and Sumei arts center.
